AVArts Scholarship Awarded to Hannah Woolfenden

On behalf of Anderson Valley Arts (AVArts), AVArts Secretary Cathleen Micheaels awarded a $5,000 Arts Scholarships for Graduating Seniors to Anderson Valley Junior & Senior High School senior Hannah Woolfenden on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the Senior Awards Night ceremony. Hannah, who is the daughter of Ann Panttaja of Boonville, will be pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance. The scholarship award recognizes not only Hannah’s serious artistic pursuits and accomplishments but also her exceptional academic achievements. As noted in the presentation of the award, presenting this scholarship to support Hannah in her continued journey to become a professional dancer is a real joy as this journey is clearly, as Hannah noted in her personal statement included with her application, the journey she was meant for and one which has already brought so much joy, meaning and purpose to her life! AVArts wishes Hannah a year ahead full of discovery, continued creativity and inspiration as she furthers her education.

We generate our funding primarily through volunteer events and depend on community participation and support. AVArts provides scholarship support to graduating students pursuing further education in the visual, performing, literary and multimedia arts and also to students in 3rd to 12th grade to attend arts-related classes, workshops and events. AVArts also supports bringing diverse, quality supplemental arts programs to Anderson Valley schools that would otherwise not be possible. History Stories

A Cross-Age, Project Based Learning History & Arts Project Anderson Valley Junior & Senior High School 2018-2019

The History Stories—A Cross-Age, Project Based Learning History & Arts Project brought artist and arts educator Cathleen Micheaels together with Anderson Valley Junior & Senior High School (AVJ&SHS) social studies and history teacher Nat Corey-Moran to collaborate on planning and delivering a project based learning, integrated history and arts project with the two 7th grade World History classes during the 2018-2019 school year. The project built on the highly successful History Stories project carried out during the 2017-2018 school year and focused on the wide range of historical eras and periods students investigate and learn about in their 7th Grade World.

History classes including the classical Maya, Aztec and Inca civilizations, the rise and fall of Rome and Byzantium, the rise and spread of Islam, classical West African civilizations, ancient China and Japan and medieval, renaissance and enlightenment Europe.

The History Stories project engaged students in researching, writing and creating children’s books about historical figures and events to then share with younger students at Anderson Valley Elementary School (AVES) through a Reading Buddy exchange. Students worked in teams to research a historical figure or event they were investigating and learning about in 7th grade World History classes and then wrote, designed, created and illustrated age-appropriate children’s books.

Topics included how ancient twin Mayan brothers discover cocoa and then how their mother accidently mixes the chocolate into her famous atole recipe; a young boy born in a West African family of griots or jalis (musician storytellers) who grows up to be a famous drummer; a poor girl working in a castle in Medieval Spain who steals the king’s treasured round of manchego cheese to help her hungry family; a young orphaned boy in feudal Japan who is adopted by a monk and becomes a samurai; a French pastry chef who needs to impress King Louis XVI in Paris so he creates the famous macaron while he is teaching the king’s son young Louis Joseph to bake; an Incan princess who refuses to marry as her father the king of Cuzco wishes so she runs away into the high Andean mountains and becomes an ice maiden.

The project focused on the historical time periods of 1492-1900 students were investigating and learning about in their 8th Grade U.S. History class and engaged students in researching, writing, illustrating and creating children’s story books to then share with younger students at Anderson Valley Elementary School (AVES) through a Reading Buddy exchange with the Kindergarten and 2nd grade classes.

Anderson Valley Elementary School Family Arts Night!

Another very sweet and FUN Family Arts Night which was a big success with a full house and a final count of 135 families and children. Thank you to all our who participated, all our volunteers and the Anderson Valley Education Foundation for generously funding this event!

From Hannah who received a $1,600 Special Arts Related Scholarship to cover tuition for her participation in the American Ballet Theatre’s 2017 four-week summer intensive in Austin, TX:

“Dear AV Arts, I just wanted to thank you for the generous scholarship you gave me for attending American Ballet Theatre’s summer intensive in Austin, Texas. I had an amazing experience and feel like I have grown a lot as a dancer. I got to take four dance classes a day, Monday through Friday, and two classes on Saturdays. At the end of the month we got to perform a short piece from a ballet called Raymonda. I had such a blast learning and getting stronger over the course of the intensive. Thank you so much for helping me attend such an amazing program and for helping me grow as a dancer. Hannah Woolfenden”

AVArts Scholarships Awarded to Aspiring Young Artist Graduates!

Anderson Valley Arts (AVArts) awarded Arts Scholarships for Graduating Seniors to three Anderson Valley Junior & Senior High School students on Thursday, June 15, 2017. AVArts member Terry Ryder presented the scholarships to these talented graduates who will be continuing their arts education beyond high school as follows:

• an award of $5,000 to Julia Brock, daughter of Vickie and Michael Brock of Boonville, to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Cinematography at Columbia College Hollywood (Los Angeles);

• an award of $750 to Riley Lemons, daughter of Erica and Matt Lemons of Philo, to pursue an Associate of Arts degree in Music at Butte Community College (Oroville); and

• an award of $750 to Raul Ellison-Malfavon, son of Erin and Fernando Malfavon of Philo, to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Animation and Game Development at California State University, Chico.

AVArts also recently awarded a $1,600 Special Arts Related Scholarship to Hannah Woolfenden (class of 2019), daughter of Ann Panttaja of Boonville, to attend the American Ballet Theater’s summer intensive dance program in Austin, Texas. Hannah will study technique and artistry and will participate in a performance at the end of the four-week program.

Hannah Woolfenden, Sugar Plum Fairy

Hannah was the recipient of an AVArts scholarship a few years ago. She has continued her studies in ballet and is now dancing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker. This is her 10th year performing in the Nutcracker for the Mendocino Ballet Company.

Performances are taking place in Fort Bragg this weekend, 10th and 11th, and in Ukiah on December 16, 17 and 18 at the Mendocino College Theater.
